The BESA National Conference and Awards took place on 21st November at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in London. The event gathered industry professionals to network and celebrate the best in the sector. Regional award winners assembled to compete for the national title in their respective categories.

The Building Services Engineer Apprentice of the Year Award, sponsored by Hamworthy, went to Ethan Addis from NG Bailey. It was the second year in a row that apprentices from the company won the prestigious award.

We had the opportunity to catch up with Ethan to learn more about the aspiring talent.

Ethan, how long have you been with NG Bailey and what’s your background?

After finishing my A Levels in Maths, Physics and ICT, I knew I wanted to go into engineering. I applied for an NG Bailey Building Services Engineering apprenticeship and was successfully appointed in September 2017. I have now enjoyed two years of the apprentice programme and look forward to the journey and my career progression. I have attended Leeds College of Building to complete a Building Services in the Construction Industry Level 3 course and have achieved a D*D*. I have also completed an NVQ Level 3 Certificate in Building Services Engineering Technology and Project Management a year in advance.

Why did you want to become a building services engineer?

I have always wanted to become an engineer, the skills and attributes fitted my personality, but I didn’t know what type of engineering to focus on. After doing some research, building services engineering caught my attention.

After my first year working on Bath University, I was fully immersed into the industry and got involved as much as I could. It felt great seeing what I learned at college being adapted to the project in real time and my enthusiasm grew.
This experience ultimately got me invested in Building Services Engineering and now I want to keep progressing and expanding my knowledge.

Why were you put forward for the regional awards?

I was nominated by my line manager Ian MacKenzie who has been monitoring and supporting my progress since I started at NG Bailey in the Reading and South West region. My enthusiasm and approach to work were two of the reasons why I was put forward for the award.

What was your reaction when you heard you had won the award?

I was initially surprised to win the award and very grateful. To receive recognition for a job I like doing so much is reassuring and will only help me progress through the remainder of my apprentice programme and onwards into my future career. It has further motivated me to develop and achieve my goal of becoming a senior project manager before I am 30. I would like to congratulate everyone nominated at the awards and specifically in my category. They’ve undoubtedly worked very hard to get there. Thank you and well done to everyone!

Frank Clayton, Head of Learning and Development who looks after the apprenticeship programme at NG Bailey added,

“Winning the award two years in a row is a fantastic accolade, not only recognising our apprentices but the programme too. Our aim is to ensure our apprentices develop both technically and as individuals, and it’s always great to have that focus on excellence recognised externally by winning such a prestigious award.”
