On 1st November, the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) held its national conference exhibition and awards, an event to celebrate the best talent in the UK. One of those recognised on the night was Jack Dinnewell from NG Bailey, who won the Heating & Ventilation Apprentice of the Year Award sponsored by Hamworthy Heating.

Around 250 exhibitors from across different sectors got together to network and learn at this year’s BESA conference. Subjects of interests were the Hackitt Review, Carillion liquidation and technical advancements; along with a plethora of seminars for professionals to expand their knowledge.

Closely tied to the exhibition and following after were the Gala Awards, a formal black tie dinner to honour talent from across the industry. Jack Dinnewell from NG Bailey was one of the celebrated young engineers. He won the Heating & Ventilation Apprentice of the Year Award sponsored by Hamworthy Heating.

Four years prior, Jack started his apprenticeship at NG Bailey, one of the UK’s leading independent engineering and services businesses. After leaving school and joining the armed forces, he sought a ‘hands on’ role to suit his skill set. Looking into apprenticeships, he came across an opportunity to start as a heating and ventilation apprentice with the business, which allowed him to earn a living, learn at the same time and hold a qualification at the end of it.

Since joining, he has picked up valuable experience on site while also attending college to study on a block release.

Jack said,

“Every day is different from the last and I’m constantly learning. What I enjoy most are problem solving and working on-site with other employees and trades where teamwork counts. But nothing is more gratifying than to witness a job being undertaken from start to finish and seeing how far it’s come, especially when I’m watching something I’ve installed working and in use.”

On being presented with the award he commented,

“I was honoured to win the Heating & Ventilation Apprentice of the Year Award at this year’s BESA National Awards. I had won the BESA Yorkshire Regional Award earlier this year and now to be recognised in this category at the National Awards amongst my peers, who are truly talented, makes this award all the more special. I am genuinely enjoying my role as a heating and ventilation engineer and I’m thankful to NG Bailey for my apprenticeship opportunity. My colleagues have helped me to learn, develop and become the engineer I am today.”

Paul Fox, Hamworthy’s specification manager who presented the award to Jack, added,

“We’re delighted to be supporting and attracting young talents like Jack to the industry and congratulate him on his success.
We’re seeing a lot of senior engineers retire but are currently not raising our industry’s profile enough to see large numbers of young engineers joining to make up for it. Sponsoring awards like this gives the right signals and we hope to see more inspiring professionals like Jack in the future.”

BESA is one of the leading trade associations in the sector Hamworthy is working with. Thanks to its expertise, it allows the company to stay up to date with latest legislation, development and also connects them to the engineers. This special relationship allows Hamworthy to understand the issues building services and HVAC professionals are facing and develop products and knowledge content to address these. Hamworthy is a BESA Bronze Affiliate.
