Hamworthy Bake-Off Raises Money for Children in Need

To help raise money for Children in Need, the Hamworthy team took part in a bake-off challenge this November.
A traditional Dorset apple cake is hard to resist. Luckily for the Hamworthy team, there were lots to go around thanks to our charity cake sale featuring a bake-off challenge for BBC Children in Need.
BBC Children in Need believes that every child should have the chance to thrive and be the best they can be. Committed to funding organisations and project workers across the UK, the charity works to help provide support, inspiration, and opportunities for children and young people to navigate challenges and reach their goals in life.
When it came to choosing the winning cakes, it was a close call. Judged by Nathalie Pezeillier & Lee Drury from the Hamworthy Finance team, the Presales team had the recipe for success on the day with first place going to Fleur Sewell, closely followed by Sally Ennis – well-done ladies, the cakes tasted as great as they looked!
A massive well done to our seven talented bakers who cooked up these traditional treats and huge thanks to the Hamworthy team who helped to raise £40 from cake sales for a very worthwhile cause.
Dorset apple cake is a British classic so why not make your own by following Fleur’s 65 year old winning recipe.
Traditional Dorset Apple Cake
Ingredients:
½ lb (227g) cooking apples
4 oz (113g) castor sugar
½ lb (227g) plain flour
3 level tsp baking powder
Pinch of salt
4 oz (113g) brown sugar
4oz (113g) margarine
1 egg
¼ pink milk
Lemon rind
Method:
- Peel and core the apples. Chop finely and mix with the castor sugar. Stand for 15 minutes
- Grease and line a square tin
- Sieve flour and salt and baking powder into a bowl
- Stir in brown sugar.
- Add the margarine, cut into small pieces, rub in with fingertips
- Add lemon rind
- Beat egg and milk together, pour into a well in the centre of dry ingredients
- Mix well, place into prepared tin and sprinkle with sugar
- Bake in moderate oven (mark 4 / 180ºC / 350ºF) for 1 hr 10 mins or until golden brown.
