Sector: Education
Building: New build, sports complex
Products: Dorchester DR-FC Evo condensing water heater
Application: Space heating, domestic hot water

The new facilities consist of thirty-eight changing rooms, meeting rooms and viewing galleries. The pavilions accommodate teams playing a range of sports including football, cricket, rugby and American football.

The showers in the changing rooms need to be able to cope with a high demand for hot water in a short period of time due to the large number of matches that can be played simultaneously on the 150 acres of playing fields.

The Solution

J Tomlinson, Integrated Building Solutions, chose Hamworthy’s condensing water heaters and wall hung condensing boilers to provide an efficient and reliable heating and hot water solution that would satisfy the requirements of this project.

Stuart Hayward, Senior Contracts Engineer, J Tomlinson commented,

“The equipment needed to be able to respond rapidly to demand, as well as meet the strict building regulation standards required for new buildings on energy efficiency. Hamworthy’s condensing water heaters fitted the bill perfectly.”

The plant room in each building contains two Stratton 100kW wall hung condensing boilers, four Dorchester DR-FC Evo 120kW condensing water heaters, a 1000 litre Powerstock storage tank, Chesil pressurisation unit, Burstock expansion vessel and Horton chemical dosing pot, all supplied by Hamworthy Heating.

Each Pavilion has 100 showers and the hot water demand was calculated on the number of matches that could be played at the same time to make sure the peak demand could be fulfilled by the equipment.

Stuart added,

“We chose to go for multiple units with smaller outputs rather than one or two water heaters with larger continuous outputs so that energy wasn’t wasted when there was only a small demand and there would be sufficient back up if one product was out of use.”

A remote monitoring unit was installed so that the University of Nottingham facilities management can monitor the gas usage of the equipment from the main campus.

Steve Sharratt, Site Supervisor, J Tomlinson added,

“The project had to be completed to a strict deadline so it was ready for the students returning at the start of the term. Hamworthy Heating was able to meet the quick lead times for supplying the equipment.”

The Dorchester DR-FC Evo condensing water heater offers exceptional gross seasonal efficiencies up to 98% as well as large storage capacities and a quick recovery rate.

Hamworthy’s Stratton condensing wall hung boiler has a stainless steel heat exchanger and gross seasonal efficiencies up to 97%, making it compliant with Building Regulations and the forthcoming Energy Related Products Directive. The NOx level of the Stratton 100kW boiler is 35mg/kWh, well within limits for BREEAM maximum credits.
