Forest Holme Hospice in Poole, Dorset, cares for patients with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. They were operating their heating system on two Hamworthy UR atmospheric boilers that were more than 20 years old and inefficient.
The hospice was undergoing a £1m refurbishment to change the layout of the building and bring the beds downstairs to enable patients easy access to the garden.
The Solution
Hamworthy donated two Purewell VariHeat cast iron high efficiency 65kW boilers as part of the project to upgrade their heating system. These boilers, along with the two existing Dorchester water heaters are providing the heating and hot water for the 12-bed hospice. The Clean Air Act permits boiler plant up to 150kW to be flued for discharge at low level in safe areas. As the system boilers were under this they could be discharged through the wall reducing the cost of flue installation.

The boilers exceed the minimum seasonal efficiency requirements set out in the Building Regulations Part L 2013 for existing buildings. They have superior control capability enabling them to accurately match the heating load of the hospice.
The Purewell VariHeat boilers from Hamworthy are available in 5 condensing models and 4 high efficiency non-condensing models. The cast iron boilers are commonly used in hospital and care home refurbishment projects as they are tolerant of old heating circuits. They sit on the same footprint as previous atmospheric boilers and can be easily integrated into existing systems, particularly the HE models as minimal changes are required to the flue system.
The hospice also benefits from a standard 10-year parts and labour warranty on the heat exchanger of the boilers.
